So Far. So Good.

It’s been about nine hours since Collin got out of surgery and he’s resting pretty comfortably. The day went as planned with all the positive results we saw with the first implant!

The morning seemingly flew by as everything came together. We got up around 4:30a to get everything together for the big day and get checked in at Children’s Mercy by 6:15a. By around 7a, Collin was on the gurney being wheeled into the operating room. At 9:30a he was all set up and they started the procedure. You can imagine our surprised to see Dr. Price when he walked into the waiting room around 11:45a. We thought maybe it was half-time and he was giving us an update, but he was there to let us know that all was done and the surgery was another success. We were expecting a 5+ hour surgery since this procedure was just like his one in January with the addition of also getting his right side expanded.

Looking at the x-rays, it was much like the other surgery with noticeable expansion between several of the ribs on the left side. Going back to the originals you can see a dramatic difference in his scoliosis, too, as the prosthetics are doing their job to also help straighten out his spine.

Before leaving town.

Like last time, he was brought back to the PICU after the surgery and again will stay here until we are ready to go home. It was a week of recovery in January, but that included wrestling with a fever for a few extra days. We’re hoping for the same short stay this time, too.

He seems a little more uncomfortable than the last time and is getting a bit more pain/sedation medicine, but nothing dramatically different. Even with being practically knocked out, you can still tell he’s grumpy about all the extra attachments he’s plugged into as he struggles to lift his arms up and tug on the IVs. When they decide to lighten up on the sedation, you can bet that he will be more than vocal about his opinion on tape, tubes, and other ICU decorum.

The folks here will watch him closely tonight, but it looks like everything is going as planned and we couldn’t be more happy and relieved. I’ll post another entry later tonight about our going-ons the past few months. If we haven’t talked to you in awhile, then you’ve missed lots of action.

FANTASTIC! Mine and so many others have had their prayers answered. I am so grateful that "the boy" made it through again with such finesse. Please plant a big kiss on him for me ... Look forward to the additional updates!
