Want to race?
Collin has recovered nicely from his surgery. He is weaned off all pain medicine. His incisions are looking great. We had several appointments a couple of weeks ago for follow-up and they were all pleased with his progress.
Our KC visit made for a long day. We had a follow up with Dr. Price’s office and had some x-rays and everything looks good. Then we went to do a history and physical and pre-op testing for his cleft palate repair (scheduled for July 5). Then stopped by the grandparents for a visit and a feeding. We were back on the road and home by 7:30p.
The most exciting visit, however, was our trip to see Collin’s pulmunologist. When we met with Dr. Carlile we left with a plan to begin an attempt to wean Collin off the vent – at least for parts of the day. Cool part: he has hit the ground running! We started out slow -- taking him off the vent 4 times a day for 2 minutes at a time. From there, we doubled the “sprints” every three or four days as long as he seems to tolerate it. As of today, he’s logging three one hour sprints – That’s threeeeee hours a day, folks. Unbelievable. By the time we head back to KC for his cleft palate surgery he should be up to 2-4 hours per sprint, twice a day.
So far, he’s taking to it well with seemingly no outward signs of not being able to handle the sprints. We check his vitals constantly while the vent is off, and they have been right where they should be (if not better than when he is on the vent).
He loves being off. He’s been free to roam without being tethered and that’s exactly what he has done. As soon as we shut it off he immediately points to the door and if you don’t start moving he will take off without you. So far, his favorite field trip is to my office where he can sit on the desk and bang on the keyboard. When he gets up to four hours, maybe he can write the blog?
We’ll upload some “offline” pictures upload them in the next few days.
Super Scout
While little brother has been making progress off the vent, big brother has been active since school has been out. Parker just got back from a week at Camp Arrowhead with his Boy Scout troop. He had a great time and completed enough requirements to obtain his Tenderfoot and Second Class ranks and is close to having all he needs for his First Class. This is an impressive accomplishment considering this is only his first year. We’re proud of him.
The rest of his summer includes finishing up his baseball season, art classes in July, and our Boston trip in August.
Have a great holiday.
